Rescues—Bisou

Bisou the spider monkey came to the PRC in 1993 from Beverly Hills, CA where she had reportedly been found roaming the streets. The keeping of primates as pets is regulated in California, and animal control officials concluded that the owner from who she escaped did not have the necessary permits, and so never came forward to claim her.

Since 1994, Bisou has been a companion to Booger, another ex-pet spider monkey. Although he can be a bit of a bully, Bisou has learned to stand up for herself, and Booger’s agressive displays are now more likely to be directed at humans he perceives to be trespassing in his territory.

In 1999, after spending several winters confined to indoor heated housing, Bisou and Booger moved into a spacious new indoor/outdoor enclosure. They now enjoy the freedom to choose where they spend their days and nights, and share their space with spiders Dehlia and Chester, and siamang gibbon Jenny.
