Don’t Fall For It: Woman Buys Monkey Online, Never Arrives

Erika Fleury December 24, 2014

A Wichita, KS woman tried to buy a Capuchin monkey online, but it never came. Now she wonders if she'll ever get her money back.

"For three years I've been saying no, no, no, no, no and finally we researched about how to take care of one," said Erica Craft, who tried to buy a monkey online.

There are lots of sites online willing to sell Capuchin monkeys for thousands of dollars, but Craft found one classified ad with a hundred dollar price tag. After she wired the money to Atlanta, the supposed breeder asked her to send another $860 dollars for insurance to fly the monkey from Baltimore to Kansas.

"They tried to get more money from us and threatened us with going to jail from the FBI," Craft said. No monkey ever came, that's when Craft called police. "We are probably going to hear a lot of crap from family members now, because we kinda kept this secret from them," Craft added.

Norman is one of many capuchins at the PRC who were surrendered or confiscated after making poor pets.

Animal experts warn potential buyers that monkeys are not an ideal house pet. "You can see a lot of problems, a lot attitude changes and they can be very difficult. Not to mention they can be difficult to house train," said Matt Fouts with Tanganyika Wildlife Park. Fouts understands the appeal of having an exotic animal at home, but says it takes more work than people realize. Plus many wild animals are illegal to own. "USDA has laws and permits that you have to get for a lot of animals and then states and local authorities have more restrictions a lot of times on what you can and cant have," Fouts added.

Police have seen scams like this before. Not only with monkeys, but with other animals as well. They warn if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Plus you should always be cautious when buying things on-line from classified ads.

After going through all of this, Craft says she will not try to buy a monkey again.
